P.A.S.T. Projects Have Moved.

Having intended to document The Woodmill on their Neckinger site The P.A.S.T. Projects Library and Archive has now closed along with The Woodmill's inaugural incarnation.

P.A.S.T. Projects, however, are still active and have been working on various projects including a collaboration with Jorge De la Garza for his recent exhibition at First Floor Projects, a piece for the upcoming issue of Baston Blanco and a Hi-Teen Carnival in collaboration with Gandt for their series of events at And/Or Bureau.

At present we are working on our new website and some upcoming collaborations. Watch this space.

The Studio Artist Group Show will see all parts of the Woodmill complex thrown open to the public, as we mount a celebratory exhibition featuring 90 of our Woodmill studio artist community. In addition to the permanent gallery spaces, the exhibition will spread to take over normally private communal areas, studios and other miscellany to be incorporated and adapted for this chorus finale. The exhibition will provide an insight into the life of the Woodmill project, reveal the breadth of work produced in the studios over the last 18 months, and create a fitting send-off for a vessel that has served us honorably.

Woodmill studio artist Claudia Djabbari presents the third installment of Perverted Minimalism; a touring group exhibition in collaboration with German artists Hedwig Eberle, Anna Friedel and Franka Kaßner.

Having graduated together in 2006 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich Perverted Minimalism reunites these four artists for a series of exhibitions held in Düsseldorf, London, Munich and Leipzig; the cities in which they now reside.

Possessing a shared interest in the conflict between collective and individual consciousness, Perverted Minimalism presents work that investigates political and social structures in conjunction with formal concerns.

Working across painting, sculpture, video and installation the artists reconfigure and add to the work included with each leg of the series creating a flexible and increasingly more complex installation that contradicts their reductive practices

Glasgow based artist Neil Clements' presents Bad History (15 January 2011 – 13 February 2011), an exhibition of new work of sculpture, sound and photography created for the Woodmill hangar space. Continuing a long- term investigation into the sustainability of minimal abstraction, Clement's process recontextualises formalist artmaking of the 1960's and 70's with contemporary and historical forms of cultural production. Clements has compiled the following list of books, which acted as reference material for the exhibition, to be displayed in the P.A.S.T. Projects Library for the duration of the exhibition; Kustom Kulture (Laguna Art Museum), Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution by (Stephen Levy), The Past is a Foreign Country (David Lowenthal) and The Ferus Gallery: A Place to Begin (Kristine McKenna).

The London-based collective Gandt joins together with Bergen-based collective Ytter to produce The Bergen Biennale II: The Next Generation. On the 19th, 20th and 21st of November 2010, London sees the advent of a three-fold event beginning at The Woodmill – London’s unique venue for genre-breaking art – with a launch and readings from Issue 12, ‘The New No,’ by Gandt, also featuring, Me & My Friends (Zurich/London), Alphabet Prime (Stockholm), and an adjoining schedule of readings in collaboration with P.A.S.T. Projects (London). We will see artwork from emerging artists Ytter – Anngjerd Rustand, Vilde Andrea Brun, Anne Marthe Dyvi, Julie Lillelien Porter (Bergen), Oliver MacDonald (London), Linda Rogn (Bergen), Vilde Salhus Røed (Bergen), and Alexis Dirks (Glasgow), performances by Jenny Moore (London), Nicole Bachmann (London/Zurich), Patrick Coyle (London), Sophie Risner (London), and Anngjerd Rustand (Bergen), along with both a screening of American video artists curated by Jason Underhill and of the film ‘Total Recall 2’ by Karen Nikgol (Bergen). The Woodmill’s very own Dickens Club is a proud sponsor of the second Bergen Biennale, providing drink, and a critically engaged atmosphere for debates and dancing.

The second part of the much anticipated Bergen Biennale II will take place at The Woodmill, London’s newest and freshest artist-run gallery including sets by comedian Chris Boyd (London), The Invisible Bees (London), Karen Skog Orkestra and her own-made instruments (Bergen), an afternoon of haircuts with Miss B’s Hair Salon (London), as well as the much-anticipated premiere of the feature-length film, ‘The Road to Margaritaville,’ by Jason Underhill (Los Angeles). A communal, artist-made dinner for 40 and director’s talk by Jason Underhill must not be missed as a prelude to the screening.

Ytter and Gandt come together as a naturally evolved but pivotal crux in the visioning of The Bergen Biennale 2010, a one-night stand with two days of consequences. Come experience both an exciting international program, and the dynamic art scene of London – “the old town with a young mind.”

Man in the Dark Opening Night.

The exhibition Man in Dark at Woodmill (8^th October – 7^th November 2010) explores ideas of well-being and self-betterment through the work of 10 artists from across the globe (http://www.woodmill.org/programme). With this in mind the P.A.S.T. Projects Library and Archive space has been adapted to serve as a space of contemplation and relaxation. The soothing sound of birdsong, a sofa, and low lighting provide a calm and comfortable area in which visitors can peruse exhibiting artists’ books, alternative living magazines, and self-help books. An ‘Advice Board’ has also been added to the space where visitors are asked to contribute advice relating to the relationship between art and emotional well-being, the ‘creative self’, and artistic practice. These contributions will be uploaded weekly to the P.A.S.T. Projects blog.

'Man in the Dark' embraces the ambiguous and illusory nature of humanity's belief in self- betterment, in turn exploring the frictions that exist between our search for emotional well being and our desire to develop intelligently. The works included present opposing ideologies and deal with processes of perceptual, mystical and ritual transformation. Positing the irrational and unexplainable as central to the production of artworks the exhibition functions on the fringes of the logical, with collection of works

The exhibition includes debut London presentations from Joost van den Toorn- featuring a large and confounding bronze work, and Bettina Samson- whose practice is revealed here in a series of installations, having recently exhibited within 'Dynasty' at Palais de Tokyo earlier in the year. Other pieces include early work by artists Jane and Louise Wilson, photography and text by Daniel Gustav Cramer, and new work by Lottie Cantle derived from a recent excursion to the Caribbean Sea with the National Center for Oceanography. Jon Rafman shares his perspective through a Secondlife interview as avatar Kool-Aid Man, whilst Christian Newby and Stuart Croft explore narrative and transportation through their video and film.

On the occasion of Buzz or Howl, an exhibition at the Woodmill (10^th September 2010 – 26^th September 2010) curated by Alastair Frazer, the P.A.S.T. Projects Library and Archive will be exhibiting a new collaboration developed by Frazer and P.A.S.T. Projects. The library will host archive material and documentation from the two groups exhibiting as a part of Buzz or Howl. The exhibition will showcase work by two assembled groups whose work is connected by fluid associations with each other, established by collaboration, interaction and social connections. After the exhibition the material on display will then be made accessible within the library space to the Woodmill community and visitors.

The Woodmill presents ‘Buzz or Howl’- an exhibition that peers into production emerging from a collective energy. Revealed is the work of two invited groups, who find alchemy and narrative through a strange social chemistry.

85A Collective will realise a new installation that provides intoxicant glimpses into other worlds and fictions- a portal into a darkened chasm of experience, with echoes of German Expressionism and Dada. As a cooperative group of Glasgow based artists, they come together around a shared vision of transgressive theatricality and cinematic brooding. Their exploration and ‘sideways’ approach to Industry is found through a distinct immersion in kinetic/ action sculpture, painting and performance.

Simultaneously, the Hangar Space will provide a scene for Ben Burgis and circle of associate London artists, purposefully summoned around his large revolving stage. With the milking-machine engine powering the installation’s centrepiece, the invited artists will convene together in the space with sculptural works, an evocation of characters, both loving and irreverent.

Through the relationships of the 18 artists in ‘Buzz or Howl’ are found elevatory moments of shared experience, confluences of interest and common desire, that explores a further source of purpose lurking behind individual artistic practice.

The opening night (10th September) will see live performances from both groups- 7pm onward.

There will also be a special discussion event taking place on Saturday 25th October.

For August, The Woodmill presents Heat Haze, a month-long series of events designed to take place throughout the many diverse spaces of the complex. Rather than fall into a summer stupor, Heat Haze focuses on utilizing the Woodmill building’s outdoor areas with a programme of playful and unusual activities for the public to experience and enjoy at their leisure.

The opening weekend (07.08.10) features the launch of a specially commissioned outdoor cinema by Giles Round, which will commence the screening programme. The following afternoon (08.08.10) will see the first Sound Seminar presentation from invited guest Jon Wozencroft (Touch Records/ Royal College of Art). Later in the month (21.08.10) there is a presentation of radical sound artists. Heat Haze concludes with an Americana Bonanza (28.08.10) where the Woodmill plays host to a Muscle Car meet, Shooting Ranch, Tropical Cake Boutique, Comic Book workshop, Rockabilly, Cartoons, Hog roast and more...

Reading a Wave brings together a selection of works that consider the physical nature of film. It looks at the way that artists have addressed film as a sculptural proposition; through a formal investigation of its intrinsic properties and as a material embodiment of gestures or actions. The exhibition highlights the moments of performance that are implied by the use of physical process to create the film itself, these are set in relation to pieces that use film and video as a way of sculpting and staging space. By weaving together contemporary work with a selection of more historical explorations of the technologies and techniques of film-making the show articulates an experimental, non-narrative engagement with the moving image that is continuously influential.

For the second exhibition at The Woodmill P.A.S.T. Projects are working with exhibiting artist Elena Bajo to reactivate the former incarnation of the P.A.S.T. Projects space as The Woodmill Building’s Mail Room.

This collaboration will look at the past and present manifestations of the P.A.S.T. Projects space by examining how information is, and has been, organised and delivered through the space, and how this information is maintained within the community’s collective memory.

A select group of artists, curators, writers and musicians have been asked to interpret the relationship between space, time and memory and their parameters within social space, and to mail their responses to the P.A.S.T. Projects space within The Woodmill.

These contributions, which may take the form of letters, photographs, drawings etc., will be received throughout the duration of Bajo’s exhibition (21.04.2010 - 23.05.2010) and will be displayed in the P.A.S.T. Projects space.

The initial responses will be exhibited at the opening of Elena Bajo's solo show at The Woodmill on Wednesday 21st April 2010, 7.00 - 9.30pm.

Focusing on precise moments of disruption and change Elena Bajo presents new work in response to the social, political and technological histories of the Woodmill site. In it's current incarnation the building has recently been turned into artists' studios and galleries, but it has previously been, among other things, a council office building, a stables, a bus depot and a wheelwright.

In Bajo's work the material conditions of redevelopment and regeneration, the waste generated from urban renewal, the 'stuff' of social change, combine with a performative and ongoing historical document of the local urban landscape to produce dispersed sculptural assemblages and installations that open out on to an investigation of universal political forms.

The Mail Room.

The P.A.S.T. Projects Library and Archive at Woodmill is due to be housed in the old mail room space, which is attached to the reception desk. I'm not sure how they used it as a mail room, but somebody thought that building loads of awkward corners and diagonal walls would be a good idea? Still, we can use the corner niche for some nice deep bookshelves and, if we take out a door and fill the space in, we can have one long wall of display space. We cleared out alot of the rubbish and at present it looks as follows:
